Welcome to the website of the world famous Besses Boys Band. The band was formed in 1943 and has now been making music for over 60 years. The band is a second section band based in Whitefield just outside Manchester and regularly give fine concert and contest performances both in the local area and further afield.

All Change at Besses Boys Band

A busy summer period has seen a number of changes at the band with the departure of 4 stalwart members and welcoming 6 newcomers to the ranks.

Jennifer Garrett has taken the decision to move onto pastures new after 8 successful years with the band, whilst principal Eb bass Ellie Mead has moved to Glasgow to begin an undergraduate music degree at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Harvey Rogerson and Jonathan Day have departed from the percussion and bass sections respectively, both taking playing opportunities with other bands. These members have shown unwavering dedication and commitment during their time with the band and leave with all our best wishes; they will be sorely missed.

Joining the band are James Heaton, Jamie Tattersall, Josh Panter and Sam Heath. James, currently studying at Xvarian College, joins the front row whilst Jamie is a welcome addition to the back row cornet team. Josh joins our bass section and Sam, a student at Holy Cross College, joins the percussion section.

It is also pleasing to announce that two members of our fantastic Youth Band have been promoted up to the main band. Ellen Knaggs and Toby Taylor have joined us on cornet and percussion and are now balancing their upstanding Youth Band commitments alongside main band performances. It is testament to the sterling work undertaken by our Youth Band team under the leadership of MD Tom Ridgley that players are able to make the transition and slot into the band so well.

We are delighted to welcome all our new players and wish them a long and successful tenure with the band.
